Nottingham Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo has revealed that Super Eagles striker Taiwo Awoniyi has still not reached full fitness and will be unavailable for their English Premier League game against Everton on Sunday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Awoniyi has struggled badly with injuries since he joined Nottingham Forest from German club Union Berlin two years ago. The Nigerian striker arrived with much promise from the Bundesliga, but injuries have stopped him from reaching his full potential in the Premier League.
Last season, the Nigeria international missed eleven Premier League games because of injuries. This season, the injury problems have not stopped. Awoniyi already missed two months because of injuries. However, after his return in late January, the 25-year-old hitman featured in only nine games before returning to the treatment table.
Awoniyi has been out of action since mid-March, but the extent of his latest injury has been kept under wraps.
Nottingham Forest play Everton in a crucial relegation fixture. And ahead of the game, coach Santo has shared an update on Awoniyi’s status.
“Taiwo (Awoniyi) hasn’t joined the group yet. He is still partially integrated into the group. Maybe in the middle of the week, he’ll be able to do something with us,” Santo stated.
The game against Everton is very important because of both teams’ battle to stay afloat in the Premier League. Just one point separates Nottingham Forest and Everton on the Premier League table, and a win for either of the sides would be key in the relegation battle.
