“A massive boost” – Cyriel Dessers leads Rangers title charge after thrilling weekend draw against Celtic

Cyriel Dessers scored from the penalty spot to break the deadlock in Nigeria's 2-1 win in a friendly against Ghana back in March.

Super Eagles and Rangers striker, Cyriel Kolawole Dessers has backed Rangers to go all the way to win the Scottish Professional Football League, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 29-year-old forward joined the 55-time Scottish champions from Italian Serie A side, Cremonese and has scored seventeen goals since joining the Glasgow-based club.

He led the line for The Gers on Sunday in the Old Firm derby as they played out a 3-3 draw against the Celtic. Dessers had a goal disallowed due to a foul in the build-up, but it was Rabbie Matondo’s late Kevin De Bruyne-esque scorcher that secured a point for Philippe Clement’s men.

With just two games left till the season ends, Celtic and Rangers are level on points, and are one apart on goal difference. Dessers has urged his team to show character and get one over their rivals.

“We showed on Sunday we can score three goals against a good team. Also in the previous two games, obviously we lost, but I don’t think it was fully deserved. We showed we can hurt them and if we’re a little more lucky, like with their first goal on Sunday, and then we can take our moments then we can get a good win there. Obviously, it is very close. I think we saw that quality-wise we are also very close to each other. I hope after Wednesday that I can say that we are on top of the league,” the former PSV man said in quotes revealed by Football Scotland.

Rangers were two goals down at half-time, but a spirited performance in the second half saw them level the score twice, with Dessers grabbing an assist for Abdallah Sima’s goal in the 86th minute. The former PSV man believes the mentality they showed on Sunday should be a massive boost for them to press on till the end of the season.

“With the result and performance on Sunday, in the second half especially, I think that will give us a mental boost as well, so I hope we are slightly ahead. I think it is clear that this will give us a massive boost. Hopefully we can win the postponed game and then we go on top. That is what we want. It is close, everybody could see that on Sunday. So we will have to be ready from now until the last game, but I think we are,” the Belgium-born Nigerian added.

Rangers are due to play Dundee in their game in hand this midweek and Dessers is gunning to take three points that would put them top of the league.
