The reported interest of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in hiring Herve Renard as the new head coach of the Super Eagles raises concerns about the financial sustainability of such a move, Soccernet.ng reports.
Considering the recent struggles the NFF faced in meeting the salary demands of former coach Jose Peseiro, who eventually departed from the role, it’s worrisome to contemplate the prospect of paying Renard a reported $150,000 monthly salary.
This amount, equivalent to about 213,150,000 Nigerian naira, presents a significant financial burden for the NFF.
Given the challenges of meeting previous coaching salaries, it’s prudent for the NFF to reconsider their approach and perhaps prioritize hiring a coach with more manageable salary expectations.
This could involve sticking with the original plan of appointing a home-based coach, who would likely command a lower salary and alleviate financial strain on the federation.
Names like Finidi George and Emmanuel Amuneke have been mentioned as potential candidates for the Super Eagles head coach role, among others.
Opting for a coach from within Nigeria’s football community not only ensures affordability but also fosters continuity and a stronger connection with local talent and football culture.
In the face of financial constraints, prioritizing stability and sustainability in coaching appointments is crucial for the long-term development and success of Nigerian football.

If you want the best the. You have to pay top dollar. Players are earning in excess of 100k yet you want to appoint a coach on minimum wage . The best legs for Eagles are overseas playing on top leagues with top players . I get the fact that there are many great Nigerians in other works of life, but football is so corrupt . Full of outside influences that local coaches are up against it . Let them be with the Chan Eagles and prove their worth . We don’t see clubs destroying teams in the CAF competition- look at the last Africa Games - the under 23 performed badly . Appoint the best , with a proven track record - I personally don’t believe Amunike is the best , if it was for a local coach I go with Finidi with strong back room staff- but hey it’s up to the NFF , nevertheless the longer they take to appoint the damage they are doing to Nigeria to qualify for the next World Cup

It's a brilliant idea going for a really top coach, like Renard.
however, the NFF needs to wake up to reality and finalise/find a way on how to pay the salaries of the incoming coach of class!
Except they get a good sponsor, they can't afford to pay a top class coach.

If other African Countries can pay such amounts, I see no reason why Nigeria cannot pay the salary of a top Coach. The reason why our Football Federation cannot pay the salary of top Coaches still baffles me when countries that are poorer than Nigeria can. If you want the best, then you pay for the best
