“I am afraid” – Ex-Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh predicts possible tipping point for Super Egles despite impressive AFCON outing

Former Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh has shared fears that the Super Eagles could experience a downward spiral following their second-place finish in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Super Eagles have always been one of the most talented teams on the continent, but over the years, they have often failed to reach the heights expected of them.

Before the last AFCON in 2023, there were fears about the quality of the team as they were struggling to win games. However, they surprised most football fans and reached the final of the competition, where they suffered a 2-1 loss to hosts Cote d'Ivoire.

Former Super Eagles boss Oliseh was quite impressed with the team's achievement at the AFCON but fears that history could repeat itself, as Nigeria always suffers a downtrend whenever they achieve success.

“We are at a dangerous point as a football country. After my generation stopped, Nigeria stopped winning and becoming relevant. We started celebrating ‘golden bronze'. But Keshi was able to come up and make up a team that won the 2013 AFCON,” Oliseh told Channels TV.

“However, immediately after that, we did not qualify for the 2015 and 2017 AFCON. Even though in 2015, the coach, in my opinion, is still one of the top coaches that we've ever had. So we had a nosedive then, which is something I am afraid that may happen again, and that is something we have to fight against.”

Oliseh's fears are quite justified, as the Super Eagles are currently without a coach after Jose Peseiro left his position. If the Nigeria Football Federation fail to get their acts together, the Super Eagles could experience a bad phase.

Yes Oliseh has the knowledge of the game but his temperament is his problem, you can not manage a team of super Eagles calibre with a coach of 10years old temperament and tantrums

Oliseh should completely stay away from the super eagles. Nigerians don’t need someone to that spill things for us through his uncontrolled temperament

Sunday Oliseh was a great footballer in his days and also good as a football analyst.
As a coach and manager of men he was a failure and should keep away from the national team, the Super Eagles.

He said his services are available if Nigeria needs him. That to me is an arrogant way of bidding for a job. It also shows that he has not changed. If you are good at something, politely canvas for that job like the others are doing.

Amuneke remains our best bet for the job and he has the pedigree to show for it.

Amunike is definitely a great choice. But, as usual it’s interesting to read the comments of our Igbo brothers here. You guys cannot hide your tribalism even if your life depends on it. Why try to destroy Oliseh just because you prefer Amunike? I anticipate abuse. After all, that’s your MO.

silvanus okpara is the best.He assisted Stephen Keshi to win Afcon in 2013.He was the key to Keshi s success.Known as quick silver he was a good midfielder during his playing. He remains the best match reader of all time of the senior national team. When he was removed as Keshi assistant after 2013 Afcon success due to Nff board room politics,Keshi super eagles failed
