Asisat Oshoala makes history on Bay FC debut

Super Falcons and former Barcelona Femeni forward, Asisat Oshoala made history as she scored the match-winner on her debut for Bay FC, Soccernet.ng reports.

Oshoala, 29, departed Barcelona after almost five years at the club that saw her win the UEFA Women’s Champions League twice, the Spanish league, the Copa De la Reina and the Super Copa Feminina on three separate occasions.

The 2018 WAFCON winner had just six months left on her contract with the Catalan-based club, but with talks of renewal not forthcoming, Oshoala put pen to paper with the new NWSL side, Bay FC.

Bay FC was formed in April 2023 by four former USWNT players – Brandi Chastain, Leslie Osborne, Danielle Slaton, and Aly Wagner.

The club made significant statement signings by bringing Oshoala and forking out $860,000 to secure the services of 23-year-old Zambian forward, Racheal Kundananji from Real Madrid, the highest amount spent on a female football player in history.

Drafted into the starting eleven for Bay FC’s first-ever National Women’s Soccer League game yesterday, Oshoala immediately hit the ground.

Seventeen minutes into the game, veteran right-back, Caprice Dydasco created a turnover in the attacking third. She poked the ball to Tess Boade, who found Oshoala streaking through before she thundered the ball into the back of the net with her right foot.

She celebrated in grand style with her teammates as she scored the club’s first-ever top-flight league goal in their win at the BMO Stadium in Los Angeles.

“We just wanted to enjoy ourselves, have fun and work with each other, and that’s what we did. We worked for each other. That’s what we’ll do until we get it right,” Oshoala told Mercury News after the game last night.

The six-time CAF Player of the Year signed a two-year deal with Bay FC, with the option to extend for another year as the club looks to rise through the ranks of American football.
