Can Nigeria secure victory and $7 million in AFCON 2023?

The Super Eagles of Nigeria has been seeded in the same group with the AFCON 2023 host, Cote d’Ivoire, relentless Guinea-Bissau, and Equatorial Guinea

The Super Eagles of Nigeria stand to claim $7 million in prize money if they secure victory at the forthcoming 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) recently announced a 40% increase in the prize money for the winner of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations scheduled in Côte d’Ivoire for 2023.

Jose Peseiro’s squad is poised to potentially receive this substantial amount should they triumph in the tournament.

However, concerns arise within the Nigerian football community regarding the team’s ability to clinch their fourth continental trophy based on recent performances.

With just two wins in their last five outings and two drawn matches seen as pivotal in the 2026 World Cup qualifying phase, doubts linger over Nigeria’s current form.

The Nigerian fans are particularly apprehensive about the team’s ability to secure victory, especially considering their recent struggles against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

Compounded by Wilfred Ndidi’s injury-enforced absence and the recovery struggles of his Leicester City teammate Kelechi Iheanacho, Nigeria faces goalkeeper concerns, leading to the late inclusion of Stanley Nwabali in the squad as a solution.

As the tournament draws near, uncertainties loom whether the Super Eagles can overcome these challenges and clinch the trophy, along with the $7 million prize, by February.
