AFCON 2023: Napoli’s Osimhen anticipates better Super Eagles performance against Angola

Victor Osimhen scored Nigeria’s first goal at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast against Equatorial Guinea as both sides battled out a 1-1 draw.

Super Eagles and Napoli striker, Victor Osimhen, has maintained that the Nigerian football team are yet to hit their peak at the AFCON 2023 tournament in Ivory Coast, Soccernet.ng reports.

Osimhen, 27, has scored just one goal all tournament but was instrumental for Jose Peseiro’s men as his well-placed pass found Ademola Lookman, who broke the deadlock against Cameroon last time out.

Speaking in his post-match interview, the former LOSC Lille striker praised the team for their mentality and demanded more from them as they’ll be facing Angola in the quarter-finals of the AFCON 2023.

“I cannot lie, we haven’t played the best of our football yet. I think the whole team has this mentality of winning, we want to win. For me, we are more like a family than just players. So it is important to have this mentality of winning,” the Serie A Golden Boot winner said in a discussion with BeIN Sports.

The Super Eagles have conceded just one goal in Ivory Coast, and have kept three clean sheets alongside, and that made the Napoli man proud.

“I want to give kudos to my defenders. They have been focused since the start of this competition. We also have a good goalkeeper. We want to keep this momentum going,” the striker added.

Osimhen is set to spearhead the attack as Nigeria takes on Angola on Friday at the Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny in Ivory Coast.
