Relegation dogfight: Aribo and Onuachu score to help Southampton steal big win at Ipswich

Super Eagles stars Joe Aribo and Paul Onuachu were the difference makers for Southampton as they both scored to help their side to a 2-1 win over Ipswich at Portman Road, Soccernet.ng reports.

Southampton continued their battle to stay alive in the Premier League when they travelled to Ipswich for their 24th league game of the campaign.

Coach Ivan Juric has shown a lot of faith in Nigerian stars Aribo and Onuachu since he arrived, and he kept it that way at Ipswich, as they both started for the Saints.

Ipswich dominated the early proceedings, with Julio Enciso registering three goal efforts on goal in the first 18 minutes. However, The Saints got a goal against the run of play as Joe Aribo capitalised on a loose ball in the box and struck a volley to make it 1-0 in the 21st minute.

However, that lead did not last as just ten minutes later, Liam Delap scored the equaliser for the home side.

Ipswich dominated the first half but failed to convert their chances as it ended all square after 45 minutes.

The second half was just as interesting as the first, with few chances for both sides. It looked like the game was headed for a 1-1 draw, but Onuachu had other ideas. The Super Eagles star capitalised on a parried shot by Arijanet Muric and poked the ball in the net to make it 2-1 after 87 minutes.

That goal was just enough to seal the 2-1 win for Southampton. It was the Saints’ first Premier League win since November 2024.

Onuachu now has two goals this season, while Aribo has three. Still, the Saints sit eight points away from safety. They will look to continue scoring goals and dig themselves out of their current position.
