AFCON 2023: “It is impossible for Nigeria to win the trophy”- Super Eagles hero Brown Ideye

The Super Eagles have some of the most talented players on the continent, but Ideye believes they are not ready for the AFCON

Super Eagles hero Brown Ideye has stated that Nigeria will not win the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations because they lack cohesion and are unstable, Soccernet.ng reports.

Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro took over the Super Eagles squad two years ago, but he has not inspired much confidence since he got on board.

The team has struggled to win games both at home and away, and they have looked shaky a lot of times.

Nonetheless, Peseiro would be looking to right his wrongs at the AFCON in Ivory Coast later this month.

The former Braga coach invited a strong 25-man squad for the tournament, and on paper, they are one of the favorites. However, Ideye does not share such sentiments as he believes the team is not ready to win the tournament.

“We have good players in camp, but we don't have a team. We are still building a team because we don't have a team that can the win the AFCON,” Ideye said on a Twitter space.

“I don't see this present Eagles winning this AFCON, It's not possible. We are not ready, we don't have what it takes.”

Ideye, who played for West Brom, Dynamo Kyiv, Olympiacos, and other European clubs played a crucial role for Nigeria in the run-up to their AFCON triumph in 2013.

ideye, were you ready when you won it in 2013?

were you a team when you won it 2013?

were you compact as a team when you won it in 2013.

This team can also spring surprises too

Yes I cannot agree more. Nobody gave that 2013 team any chance. Nigeria has always had an excellent Nations Cup history. This won’t be different. Even if we don’t win the trophy. Moreover, competitions are not generally won by the best team. They more often than not are won by the team who believes they can and works the hardest for it.

I love your response cos I remember that the 2013 team struggled to qualify and when we were about to meet Drogbas Ivory coast in the knock out stages, the NNF were already planning their return ticket. Keshi was embarrassed but in the end, they won the tournament.

only a fool will disagree with Ideye..
This is the worst coach Nigeria have had in a very long time…

He losses to every Tom dick and Harry..
Just imagine this team playing against Morocco, Algeria, Egypt or Senegal…

We might not get past the quarter final if we eventually make it past the group stage..

I agree with Brown Ideye. The questions Nigerians have refused to ask are, why is it that Nigerian Super Eagles with so many fine and talented footballers, who play fine and cohesive football in their various clubs abroad, has failed to play that entertaining football our national team is known for? How can Nigeria lose a world cup spot to Ghana, when the deciding leg was actually in Nigeria? With this coach, Nigeria can win nothing!. Get a good coach, these ernomous talents we have, can even win the world cup.

Yes I agree for we have the talented players but the cog is the technical department headed by who were not world class and has not been able to build a strong team from the many talents at their disposal in national team- super eagle.

The Nigerian team is always ruined by pride, mostly the international players, if they can drop this attitude no team can stop this team. There must be seriousness from day 1 if we really need this cup once again. For you Ideye, go and hide yourself, i dont even know you as a player.

This is laughable, especially coming from a very average player like Brown Ideye ! Even that AFCON winning 2013 team of Nigeria got no notable impact from Ideye. I see loquacity in Ideye

I cannot agree less with Ideye. It will be a miracle of the century if Super Eagles make the quarter final cut.

People are just blasting the guy for talking based on the reality on ground… We have some of the best players in Africa going into the tournament but the problem is that the coach and his technical assistants are not good enough!
Injuries of key players will also affect the team!
I have prepared my mind for any eventuality but the least they could do is qualify from the group…and winning the first game is a must!
