AFCON 2023: Did Francis Uzoho express displeasure over not starting in Nigeria vs. Eq. Guinea clash?

Following Nigeria’s unimpressive draw in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations opener against Equatorial Guinea, reports from Soccernet.ng reveal that Omonia FC goalkeeper, Francis Uzoho, chose to ignore the media.

Speculation among the Nigerian media contingent in Abidjan suggests that Uzoho, the Super Eagles’ number ‘1’ goalkeeper, was discontented with the inclusion of Chippa United goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, who had not featured in any of Nigeria’s AFCON qualification games.

Uzoho has been a focal point of criticism among Nigerian football enthusiasts, with his role in Nigeria’s disappointing results in previous games drawing widespread scrutiny.

Notably, he was in goal during Nigeria’s crucial 2022 World Cup qualifying clash against the Black Stars of Ghana, where his attempt to stop Thomas Partey’s shot dashed Nigeria’s hopes of World Cup qualification.

Despite being present in several other games, including the 2026 World Cup qualification matches against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, as well as the 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia in recent fixtures, Uzoho has faced criticism for his performances.

A video captured the goalkeeper leaving the dressing room for the team bus, appearing displeased and ignoring the media, unlike other players such as William Troost-Ekong and Simon Moses.

Watch the video here:

While Uzoho may be discontented with the results and possibly other team dynamics, it is suggested that his unhappiness may be directed towards Nwabali’s starting position. Additionally, it’s noted that Uzoho might be displeased with the media due to recent criticisms.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles of Nigeria are set for a crucial clash against the host country on January 18th, and it is anticipated that Chippa United’s Nwabali will be in goal once again.
