Jay-Jay Okocha reveals why Victor Osimhen should win the CAF POTY

Osimhen is one of the favourites to win the prestigious CAF prize, and Okocha has pitched his tent with the Napoli talisman

Former Super Eagles star Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has pitched his tent with Victor Osimhen ahead of the 2023 CAF Awards later this month, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Prestigious CAF Awards is set to take place on the 11th of December at the Movenpick Hotel in Marrakech, Morocco. And the highlight of the event is always the Male Payer Of The Year Award.

This year, it is a keenly contested category because of the exploits of some African players. Nigerian striker Osimhen is one of the favourites for the award after leading Napoli to their first Serie A title in 33 years with 26 goals.

He also helped them to their first-ever quarterfinal finish in the UEFA Champions League. Osimhen would be looking to end Nigeria’s 24-year wait for CAF’s crown but has stern competition from Morrocan goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, Achraf Hakimi, and former Manchester City star Riyad Mahrez.

The benchmark for this year’s award is the players’ performance in the previous season. And with Mohammed Salah and Sadio Mane performing below par last season, it could be Osimhen’s year.

Former Nigeria midfielder Okocha believes Osimhen has done just enough to win the award.

“He[Osimhen] deserves it because for me, he was the most consistent player of last season. He deserves it,” Okocha said in a Bundesliga media round table.

If Osimhen wins it, it would be the icing on the cake after getting nominated for the Balon d’Or and FIFA Best awards earlier this year.
