Nigerians abroad: Sanusi lifts Porto; Oshoala at the double for Barcelona; Chukwueze stars for Milan

Soccernet.ng highlights some eye-catching displays from Nigerian footballers outside the country’s shores on Saturday, November 11, 2023.

Mixed fortunes in the Championship

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho featured as Leicester City’s promotion hopes took a slight hit following a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough.

Semi Ajayi was a second-half substitute for West Bromwich Albion in the 2-1 loss at Southampton, with Joe Aribo watching the encounter from the bench.

Femi Onyedinma and Rotherham United crumbled to bits at the Vicarage Road, where Tom Dele-Bashiru’s Watford strolled to a 5-0 victory.

Sounds of victory in Spain

Rasheedat Ajibade and Atletico Madrid were in impeccable form as they took Eibar to the cleaners and claimed a 3-0 triumph in their Primeira Division Femenina clash.

There was little life left in Villarreal after defending champions Barcelona smoked them 6-0 in their own traditional home ground, with Super Falcons icon Asisat Oshoala contributing two of the goals.

Oshoala scored Barca Ladies’ second goal in the 24th minute off an assist from Ona Batlle and wrapped up the scoring five minutes from time.

After eight matches, Barcelona have three points more than second-place Real Madrid and eight better than Atlético Madrid in third.

In the Spanish La Liga, Umar Sadiq was in action for Real Sociedad as they embarrassed Almeria 3-1 in front of their home fans.

Draws for Eagles in Italy and Germany

Samuel Chukwueze claimed his first assist in an AC Milan shirt to help the former Italian champions clinch a 2-2 draw with Lecce in their thrilling Serie A faceoff.

In the Bundesliga, Kevin Akpoguma was immense in defence for Hoffenheim as they battled to a 1-1 draw with Augsburg.

Nnadozie dominates in France

Regina Otu and Amanda Uju Mbadi were in action for struggling Saint Etienne as they fell 1-6 on home soil to Chiamaka Nnadozie’s Paris FC.

With the win, Paris FC are comfortable in second place behind league leaders Olympique Lyonnais, as they boast a five-point lead over Fleury 91 in third place.

Youngsters Rofiat Imuran and Flourish Sabastine continued their development in the French Women’s division as they featured for Stade de Reims in their goalless stalemate with Le Havre.

Brilliant moments in Belgium and Hungary

In the Belgian Pro League, Alhassan Yusuf delivered a brilliant display in midfield, while Chidera Ejuke came off the bench to help Antwerp force an unpleasant 6-0 defeat down the throat of Standard Liège.

Lagos-born teenager George Ilenikhena was among the goals for Antwerp as he found the net in the 74th minute for his third goal in his last four league games.

In the Hungarian NB 1, Bright Edomwonyi opened the scoring for Diósgyőr to power the club to a straightforward 2-0 victory against Mezőkövesd.

Jos-born defender Godfrey Stephen was a key player in defence for the home side, helping them to their second clean sheet in as many games.

Sanusi, James star in Portugal, Turkey

Zaidu Sanusi scored his first goal of the season to lift Porto to a come-from-behind 1-2 win at Vitoria Guimaraes.

The Super Eagles left-back was, however, replaced shortly after the start of the second half after picking up a knock.

Kelechi Nwakali would have desired a similar ending, but it was not to be, as his Chaves side stumbled to a 2-1 loss on the road to Portimonense.

In the Romanian Liga 1, Philip Otele scored CFR Cluj’s third goal in their entertaining 3-3 draw against Politehnica Iași.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru provided the assist to the winning goal for Hatayspor in their narrow 2-1 win over high-flying Galatasaray in their Super Lig clash.

After losing to Galatasaray last time, Kenneth Omeruo and Kasımpaşa fell to a second consecutive defeat after allowing Kayserispor to leave the Recep Tayyip Erdoğan Stadyumu in İstanbul with a 3-4 triumph.

In the Turkish second division, Adeniyi James was among the goals for Tuzlaspor as they cooked a 3-1 beating for Giresunspor at the 15 Temmuz Stadı, İstanbul.
