Last season’s UEFA Europa League top-scorer joined Die Werkself in a deal worth over twenty million euros in the summer transfer window.
Super Eagles striker, Victor Okoh Boniface, has described Bundesliga side, Bayer 04 Leverkusen as the perfect club for him, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Nigerian enjoyed a stellar season in Belgium with Union Saint-Gilloise, and his performances saw him move to a bigger club in Leverkusen.
Under the tutelage of Xabi Alonso, Boniface has scored ten goals and set up another four for his teammates in just fourteen outings for the Reds.
Speaking to UEFA, the 22-year-old mentioned how his performances against German teams might have earned him a move to Germany.
“I had a good season with Union Saint-Gilloise and with them in the Europa League, luckily for us, we played against two German teams. Union Berlin, and Bayer Leverkusen, and I think I did pretty well for myself,” the 1.91m tall striker told UEFA.com.
Boniface had offers from several top clubs across Europe, but the Nigerian opted to play for Leverkusen because of high expectations and the pressure that comes with playing football at the highest stage.
“I had good options from different clubs, but for my football journey, it’s step by step. I didn’t want to jump from the Belgian league to the Premier League, because it’s a big step and the expectation is high, and Leverkusen, is a great team, with the way they play football, they’re one of the biggest clubs in Germany,” the 22-year-old added.
With ten goals in fourteen games, Boniface feels Leverkusen are a perfect fit for him, and the best team for him to develop as a young player.
“When I was in Nigeria, my agent told me about Leverkusen’s interest and he told me they develop young players,
and I said to myself, I like the way they play. I spoke to the director and he explained everything to me and I thought, this is the perfect club for me.”
With Boniface in attack, Leverkusen are unbeaten on all fronts, and were the first club to score fifty goals in Europe this term, remaining solid at both ends of the pitch.
