“We didn’t know Bellingham would be sold” – Dortmund’s sporting director speaks on missing out on Boniface

Bayer 04 Leverkusen’s new poster boy, Boniface, has been in fine form for club and country, scoring goals and creating them on all fronts.

Borussia Dortmund’s Sporting director, Sebastian Kehl has finally broken the silence on Boniface’s transfer after the club rejected the chance to sign the Nigerian, Soccernet.ng reports

Boniface, 22, has been firing on all fronts for Die Werkself this season, scoring seven and setting up two in seven games for his new side, winning two Rookie of the months alongside.

The ex-Union Saint-Gilloise striker could have been playing for Borussia Dortmund though, but the Black and Yellows bosses refused the chance to sign the striker, with Sebastian Haller and Moukoko remaining as trusted options up-front.

Die Schwarzgelben’s Sporting Director, Sebastian Kehl has however clarified that he has no regrets whatsoever about missing out on the red-hot Super Eagles’ striker.

“I’m not upset at all because I know that timing and circumstances are incredibly important elements in my job to be able to make the right decision at the right moment. At the time when such transfers were being negotiated and executed, we didn’t know that Jude Bellingham would be sold,” Kehl revealed to Funke Sports.

A former Dortmund player himself, Kehl mentioned that the Boniface transfer wasn’t handled with seriousness because they had eyes on several options, and the striker position wasn’t a necessity at the time.

“There was no budget, therefore. Moreover, at that time, it wasn’t necessarily the plan to add another striker to the squad. Regardless of the Boniface situation, I find it interesting how players we had on our radar developed at other clubs. By the way, there are also many examples where I’m glad they are not under contract with Borussia Dortmund,” the 43-year-old added.

When the need to get a striker arrived, Leverkusen had taken Boniface, leaving Dortmund to go after Torjägerkanone winner, Nicklas Fullkrug.

Leverkusen looks to have gotten the better side of Dortmund’s Boniface’s rejection, winning all but one of their games in all competitions, and are currently top of the Bundesliga title, mounting an early title charge.
