NPFL: Sporting Lagos continue journey at the top with a draw at Akwa

Sporting Lagos have experienced a meteoric rise in Nigeria, going from the NNL to the top-flight league in just over a year.

Sporting Lagos continue their Nigeria Professional League journey with a trip to Akwa United ending in a goalless draw for the Lagosians, Soccernet.ng reports.

The noisy Lagosians won their opening League game against Gombe United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, and embarked on a trip to Anambra to face Akwa United.

Godswill Akpabio International Stadium welcomed the NPFL newbies to town. Akwa United lost their opening game to Bayelsa United, with Robert Mizo on fire, as he scored a hat trick.

For Sporting, they went into the game without their coach. The ex-Warri Wolves assistant manager travelled to Namibia for a coaching course, leaving his assistants in charge.

The men on the sideline fielded an unchanged team to the same that started in their win last Monday, with goalscorer Rivio Ayemwenre involved.

The first half saw chances few and far between, with Christian Nwoke keeping United out on few occasions where they looked lively, meanwhile Saturday Okon had the closest chance to open the scoring for the visitors, but just missed.

Super Eagles striker, Junior Lokosa, came on after fifty-five minutes to spark life into Sporting’s attack, but it was their goalkeeper, Nwoke who kept thwarting Akwa’s attack to keep the scoreline goalless.

The referee added seven minutes after a nail-biting encounter between both sides, and he blew the final whistle, with neither side able to break the deadlock.

The draw gives the Naija Super 8 winners their second cleansheet of the season, meanwhile Akwa United secure their first point.
