After a sensational start to life in Germany, the Super Eagles striker came up short for the first time in the running for one of the two most prestigious awards in the top flight
Stuttgart’s rising star Serhou Guirassy has clinched the Bundesliga Player of the Month for September, dashing Victor Boniface’s hopes of a consecutive win, Soccernet.ng reports.
Boniface was bidding to become Player of the Month for the second successive month, having claimed the honour in August. The former Union Saint-Gilloise ace had earlier scooped the Rookie of the Month award for August and September.
The 22-year-old striker was equally impressive in September, as he started every Bundesliga match Leverkusen played in, hitting the most shots on goal in the league by some distance (25).
However, despite Boniface’s impressive stats in the league, Guirassy romped to claim the accolade following his exceptional performances in the period under review.
Guirassy’s stellar season has been marked by a stunning goal-scoring spree, save for a recent dry spell against Koln.
With a remarkable 13 top-flight goals in just seven matches, the Guinean has etched his name in Bundesliga history, even outshining the likes of renowned stars Gerd Muller and Robert Lewandowski.
The Guinean forward’s remarkable 42% conversion rate and diverse goal-scoring abilities have overshadowed the impact of Harry Kane, Bayern Munich’s high-profile addition.
Guirassy’s record-breaking form also poses a significant challenge to Lewandowski’s 41-goal record from the 2020/21 season.
Meanwhile, Boniface, the former Union Saint-Gilloise sensation, remains determined to rejoin the contention for the award, having already scored in Leverkusen’s sole October match, a 3-0 victory over Cologne.
Boniface will look to bolster his tally further when Leverkusen take on Wolfsburg today.
