Nonetheless, Die Werkself did not have to wait too long before they got their breakthrough. After some great attacking play that resulted in the Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe parrying a shot, Jonas Hofmann, who was nearby, pounced and converted to make it 1-0 for Leverkusen after 22 minutes.
Ten minutes later, Jeremie Frimpong added another goal for the home side off an assist from Alejandro Grimaldo.
Bayer Leverkusen saw our their two-goal lead till halftime. But they did not reduce their intensity in the second half.
Boniface put in a great shift, and his hard work eventually paid off in the 67th minute. Xabi Alonso’s men went on a quick counter with Hofmann running the show. After a quick dart into the box, he simply squared the ball to Boniface, who knocked the ball into an empty net to make it 3-0.
Boniface was taken off for Adam Hlozek in the 81st minute, and it ended 3-0 at Bay Arena. The Nigerian striker now has nine goals in ten games for Die Werkself.
