Report: Onuachu “devastated” as transfer from Southampton falls through

The Nigerian striker joined Southampton in January, but it has proven to be a wrong move

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu is set to remain with English Championship side Southampton this season as his proposed transfer to Genk has fallen through, Soccernet reports.

Onuachu left Genk for Southampton in January this year in a deal worth €18million. The big Nigerian striker arrived at the St. Mary’s with a lot of hype after registering 85 goals and 10 assists in 134 appearances for the Genk.

Unfortunately, the move has not gone as planned. Onuachu was relegated to being a bench warmer in a struggling Southampton side that got relegated last season.

This season, his fortunes have not improved, as despite their drop to the Championship, the 29-year-old has made just one appearance, which was in the EFL Cup.

There have been serious talks that Onuachu wants to leave Southampton this summer. Ligue 1 club Metz were linked on deadline day, but the transfer did not materialize. Genk have also been in the conversation- a player swap deal was discussed between Southampton.

However, according to Sacha Tavolieri, the deal is now off. The Belgian transfer window closes on the 6th of September. Still, the deal will not happen as none of the parties have agreed on a deal, and Tavolieri say the Super Eagles striker is devastated by his current predicament.

It does not seem like his situation will improve at Southampton, and a Genk return would have assured him more game time.

Nonetheless, the Turkey and Saudi Arabia transfer windows are still open until the middle of September. He could still get his move.
