Super Eagles defender, Zaidu Sanusi, had to be subbed off at half-time at the Volksparkstadion as Porto defeated Shakhtar Donetsk.
Porto recorded a 3-1 win away to Shakhtar, but Nigerian full-back, Zaidu Sanusi couldn’t complete the game as he had to be subbed off at half-time due to an injury, Soccernet.ng reports.
Porto’s coach, Sérgio Conceição explained in his post-match conference why he took off the twenty-six-year-old in a precautionary move, as the full-back showed signs of discomfort in his muscles towards the end of the first half.
Sanusi had played the last twenty-five consecutive UEFA Champions League games for the Portuguese side but had to make way for Brazilian Wendell.
Conceição reiterated that the defender will be subject to further checks before the full information on his injury is fully known. Speaking on the club’s official website, the forty-eight-year-old tactician explained why Portuguese right-back, João Mario and Sanusi had to be taken off.
Mario was substituted much later in the second half, but the coach said; “João Mário left due to tiredness. Zaidu may have a muscle problem and we thought he shouldn’t be in the second half, but when we arrive in Porto he will be re-evaluated.”
Since joining the club in 2020, Sanusi has played a hundred and sixteen games for Porto, scoring six goals, but was not called up for Nigeria’s African Cup of Nations Qualifiers game against São Tomé and Príncipe earlier this month.
