Future of Super Eagles duo in question as Leicester City set to hold off contract talks

Leicester City have enjoyed a great start to life under the guidance of Italian manager, Enzo Maresca, but he has held off contract talks.

Leicester City coach, Enzo Maresca, has declared that the club will hold off contract talks for players whose contracts are winding down for the time being, Soccernet.ng reports.

This news comes off the back of Leicester midfielder, Hamza Choudhury signing a new four-year deal with the Foxes, a deal that runs through 2027.

Jamie Vardy, Marc Albrighton, Dennis Praet, Alex Smithies and Super Eagles duo – Wilfred Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho’s contracts all run out in 2024, and the Italian manager has labelled contract talks with these players not a priority right now.

For Maresca, it’s not anywhere near the top of the to-do list for now. Speaking in his press conference on Friday, the manager stated that the focus for him is on the team’s performance and the season’s outcome, rather than contract renewals.

“At this moment, we are focused on our season and our games. We have time to see it and decide. In this moment, the priority is not that” in quotes revealed by Leicester Mercury.

The manager further explained Choudhury got a new deal because of his progress and commitment to training, as he is on the right path to adapting to a new position.

“The reason why is for sure he is going to help us, and then because he deserves it. He’s from the academy and working very hard. He’s been training very well since day one. He can do the job we are looking for like Ricardo(Pereira) is doing,” the 43-year-old tactician added.

Iheanacho and Ndid won the FA Cup with the Foxes in 2021, but their time at the club might be coming to an end, as they’ll be free to enter into pre-contract talks with other clubs at the start of the winter transfer window, should Leicester refuse to open negotiations with the duo.
