“We rely on him” – Napoli boss confirms Osimhen has snubbed mega Saudi riches to stay in Naples

The Nigeria international was on target for the Italian champions on Friday night and appears set to lead the club’s challenge ahead of next season

Napoli’s head coach, Rudi Garcia, has confirmed that Victor Osimhen will extend his stay in Naples, ending the speculation surrounding the striker’s future, Soccernet.ng reports.

Following an exceptional goalscoring performance last season, Osimhen became the primary target for several of Europe’s top clubs. However, Napoli’s steep demands deterred all contenders from securing his signature.

While various prominent European clubs faltered in their pursuit, the Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal seemed poised for success.

Al-Hilal made not one but two bids for Osimhen and offered an alluring salary package that would have rendered him the highest-earning African footballer in history.

Despite immense pressure from family and friends to embrace the riches and relocate to Saudi Arabia, Osimhen has seemingly resolved to remain with Napoli.

The 24-year-old forward was again on target during Napoli’s 2-0 victory against Apollon Limassol in a recent friendly match on Friday.

Speaking to Sky Sport in a post-match interview (via Tutto Napoli), Garcia confirmed the impending contract renewal for Victor Osimhen.

According to the former AS Roma manager, Osimhen’s mandate is straightforward – to continue delivering exceptional performances and goal-scoring prowess for Napoli.

Garcia expressed, “I want Osimhen to be happy. The club and the player have executed commendable efforts. He’s an essential driving force for us; we rely on his goal-scoring capabilities.

“Once the agreement is official, he’ll be able to focus solely on his on-field contributions, a prospect that I find preferable.”

Osimhen’s striking abilities were pivotal last season, as he netted an impressive 26 goals in the league, propelling Napoli to their first Scudetto title in 33 years.

Additionally, he notched five goals in the UEFA Champions League, significantly contributing to Napoli’s first qualification for the quarterfinals in the competition’s history.
