Alex Iwobi played all Everton’s 38 Premier League matches last season, registering two goals and seven assists
Everton manager Sean Dyche has confirmed that talks are ongoing between Alex Iwobi and Everton over a contract extension, Soccernet.ng reports
Iwobi, who joined the Toffees in the summer of 2019 from Arsenal, has been one of the key players for the club in the past two seasons under English managers Frank Lampard and Sean Dyche.
The 27-year-old initially struggled in his early days at the club but reignited his form under the tutelage of Frank Lampard. Iwobi was central to Everton’s escape from relegation at the end of the 2021/22 campaign, playing as a right wing-back.
His influence grew last season as his versatility once again proved important for the club. He was deployed in the midfield and made nine goals contributions for Everton, who escaped relegation on the final day of the season.
It was his performances in the opening months of last season that prompted Everton to start talks about opening a new deal for the midfielder in September, but no conclusion has yet been reached, however, and the Nigeria International is now in the final year of his current contract.
Dyche when asked about the situation of the new deal for the former Arsenal star, disclosed that they are still working on extending his time at the Goodison Park.
Me and [director of football Kelvin Thelwell] have been speaking about the idea open with agents, open with players, and fathoming out in a way that is more open scenario – open conversation, where at we at with it, what is the truth of it, and working it all out. That is just the ongoing process, not just with him but with every player whose contract has either got a renegotiation or a question mark or time lapse, Dyche told Liverpool Echo
Iwobi will aim to help his club again this season as they start their Premier League campaign today at home against Fulham. He has nine goals and 16 assists in 138 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside club.
