NPFL: Ex-Super Eagles star takes over as Abia Warrior’s coach

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Ike Shorunmu has been appointed the goalkeeper coach at NPFL side Abia Warriors Football Club, Soccernet.ng reports.

The unveiling ceremony took place on Monday at the club’s Secretariat in Umuahia, where the newly appointed Chairman of Abia Warriors, John Obuh, introduced Shorunmu to the team’s management.

Coach Obuh emphasized the decision to bring Shorunmu on board was rooted in the veteran’s extensive experience and proven track record in goalkeeping.

He expressed optimism that Shorunmu’s addition would significantly contribute to the coaching team’s capabilities and ultimately benefit the club.

In his response, Ike Shorunmu conveyed his commitment to joining Abia Warriors and expressed confidence in the team’s potential for success in the upcoming season.

A statement from the Abia Warriors Media Team, represented by Mr. Igwe Onuoha, described this development as “very exciting.”

Governor Alex Otti recently appointed Obuh, a former Flying Eagles head coach, to lead the Abia Warriors Management team, aiming for more efficient management and improved performance.

Ike Shorunmu’s Illustrious Career

Born 55 years ago in Lagos, Ike Shorunmu started his football journey in Nigeria, playing for clubs like Stationery Stores, Concord, and Shooting Stars.

He then ventured abroad to Switzerland, where he served as the goalkeeper for Basel and Zürich between 1995 and 1999.

In 1999, Shorunmu made a significant move to Turkish club Beşiktaş J.K., commanding a transfer fee of $2,400,000.

After two years, he continued his journey, making appearances for Lucerne, Samsunspor, and Juventus Zürich before retiring from professional football in 2006.

Notably, Shorunmu was the first-choice goalkeeper for the Nigerian national team during the Ghana/Nigeria 2000 AFCON, where the Super Eagles clinched the silver medal.

His international presence extended to the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in two of Nigeria’s three matches.

Post-retirement, Shorunmu ventured into goalkeeper coaching.

His notable coaching roles include serving as the national team goalkeeper coach and contributing to the development of Enyimba F.C.

In 2010, he took up a similar role at Heartland FC, continuing his impactful journey within Nigerian football.

Ike Shorunmu’s appointment marks a significant addition to Abia Warriors’ coaching crew, and the club is poised to leverage his rich experience as they aim for a successful season.
