Father Vs Son: Veteran Nigerian goalkeeper squares up against son in pre-season tournament

The former Enyimba goalie has had a long career, and he would hope that his son does better than him

Former Enyimba goalkeeper Dele Aiyenugba played against his son Daniel Aiyenugba when his Kwara United side squared up against Beyond Limits in the semifinals of the Value Jet Cup in Ikenne, Soccernet reports.

Aiyenugba is one of the most successful goalkeepers in the Nigeria Professional Football League. He won the CAF Champions League twice with Enyimba in 2003 and 2004, and he has four Premier League titles to his name as well.

The 39-year-old shot-stopper also had stints with Israeli sides Bnei Yehuda, Hapoel Ashkelon, Hapoel Iksal, and Hapoel Afula before returning to Nigeria with Enyimba.

Aiyenugba is now with Kwara United, and ahead of the new Nigeria Professional Football League season, which begins later this month, his club have been playing pre-season games.

They are currently featuring in the Value Jet Cup, a tournament which consists of seven top-flight clubs and one from the lower tiers. Coincidentally, Kwara United met with Beyond Limits in the quarterfinal, bringing about the reunion of father and son.

Dele, the father, manned the sticks for the Afonja Warriors while his son Daniel was on duty for Beyond Limits. The game ended 2-2 after regulation time, and the lower league side clinched it 3-2 on penalties.
