Brazilian Marta hopes to cap her final World Cup tournament: Why Ebi should follow suit

There is growing excitement as the Women’s World Cup approaches, not only for the legendary Brazilian player Marta Vieira da Silva’s final tournament appearance, but also for the eventual departure of Super Falcons captain Onome Ebi.

While Ebi has yet to make an official announcement about her retirement, it is believed that following in the footsteps of Marta would be a fitting decision, giving young players a chance to showcase their talent on the international stage.

Ebi’s remarkable career and achievements make her an icon in Nigerian and African football. With four African title victories under her belt, she has been a pillar of strength and leadership for the Super Falcons.

However, just like Marta, Ebi has left an indelible mark on the sport, inspiring aspiring players across the continent.

As she considers her future beyond the upcoming tournament, retiring would not only provide an opportunity for her to celebrate her achievements, but also open the door for the next generation of players to step into the spotlight.

Retiring after the tournament would allow Ebi to gracefully pass the torch to younger players, creating space for fresh talent to emerge and flourish.

It would be a selfless act demonstrating her commitment to the growth and development of women’s football in Nigeria. By stepping aside, Ebi would provide an invaluable opportunity for young players to showcase their skills, gain international experience, and contribute to the future success of the Super Falcons.

Additionally, Ebi’s decision to retire would send a powerful message that the game is bigger than any individual player and that a team’s success relies on the collective effort of both experienced and emerging talents.

While Ebi’s retirement would undoubtedly mark the end of an era for Nigerian football, it would also signify the beginning of a new chapter filled with hope, growth, and the promise of fresh talent in Nigerian football.

  • I don't understand the logic behind this write up. If Ebi chooses to remain, nothing stops the younger ones from proving their worths and upstage her from the National team. So her not retiring means she sees herself as bigger than football? Funny
