Rangers have had an affinity for Nigerian players recently, and Dessers is the latest to join their roster
Super Eagles defender Calvin Bassey has congratulated Nigeria teammate Cyriel Dessers following his transfer to former Scottish Premiership champions Rangers, Soccernet.ng reports.
Rangers have had an affinity for Nigerian talents in recent years. Before last season, they had three Nigerian players on their roster- Joe Aribo, Bassey, and Nnamdi Ofoborh. However, Aribo and Bassey left last summer for Southampton and Ajax, respectively.
On Thursday, they confirmed the signing of Dessers from Cremonese. The Gers paid Cremonese €5million to acquire the 28-year-old Nigerian striker’s services on a four-year deal.
Dessers shared the development on his social media page, and some of his Super Eagles congratulated him on his move.
Ajax star Bassey, a transfer target for Brighton, said: “Yes, my boy”, while Arsenal forward Reiss Nelson replied to his post with two love emojis.
Super Eagles vice-captain William Troost-Ekong also said, “Gefeliciteerd bro”, and Atalanta star Ademola Lookman also wished him good luck.
Dessers would team up with his Rangers teammates for pre-season once he settles in.
With Michael Beale as manager, the former Genk man would be expected to play a crucial role in the team as they look to challenge Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.
He is an experienced goalscorer, scoring goals in Belgium, Italy, and Netherlands.
Dessers also has experience playing European football, as he was the highest goalscorer in the UEFA Conference League two seasons ago.
