Bordeaux could lose the potent Super Eagles striker this summer if he refuses to pen a new deal
French Ligue 2 club Bordeaux are preparing a new contract for Super Eagles striker Josh Maja who scored 17 goals for the club last season, Soccernet.ng reports.
Maja joined Bordeaux from Sunderland in 2019, but he went on two unproductive loan deals at Stoke City and Fulham.
He returned to Bordeaux last summer, following their relegation to Ligue 2. Maja was coming on the back of two unproductive seasons that saw him score just 16 goals in 76 games.
However, he got into his stride last season, scoring 17 goals in 40 appearances for Bordeaux. Maja almost guided them to Ligue 1 promotion but for some final-day shenanigans by a fan that saw their hopes go up in smoke.
The 24-year-old goal poacher is set to be out of contract by the end of June, but Bordeaux want to keep him.
According to GFFN, Maja had a clause in his contract that would have extended his deal by one year if the club gained promotion to Ligue 1. Since that did not work out, Bordeaux are looking to offer the Super Eagles striker a one-year contract, with the option of a year extension.
After scoring 16 Ligue 2 goals, Maja would have caught the attention of some Ligue 2 teams. Bordeaux may have a tough time keeping their man.
