Haaland’s success at Manchester City proves why Bayern Munich should go all out for Osimhen

Bayern Munich let Robert Lewandowski leave last summer, but they failed to get a proper replacement

Reigning Premier League champions Manchester City defeated Bayern Munich 4-1 on aggregate to advance to the semifinal of the UEFA Champions League.

Brutal Norwegian goal poacher Erling Haaland scored two goals and provided an assist to spur his team to an outstanding victory over the German kings.

Scoring twice against Bayern Munich is no mean feat but in Haaland’s case, it was just another day in the office.

Last season, Pep Guardiola operated using a false nine. And while it yielded fair results as Manchester City won the Premier League title, there was always a feeling that something was amiss in the attack. They were less direct on many occasions and had to depend on their intricate play to break down defenses.

Of course, that yielded a Premier League trophy, but there was always the feeling that the team could have achieved more with a potent marksman lurking in the box.

Then last summer, Guardiola splashed €60million on red-hot Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. And he has performed above all expectations.

The big Norwegian has registered 48 goals and six assists in 41 games for the Cityzens. His impact on the team has been immense, and his effect against Bayern Munich was just another of his superb displays.

Bayern Munich on the other hand sold Lewandowski to Barcelona last summer, but they did not get a good replacement for him. The Bavarians are known for their great scouting and frugal spending, albeit they have broken the bank a few times in recent years.

The plan was to rely on Sadio Mane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting this season. However, that decision has not exactly paid off. Choupo-Moting has had a decent season with 17 goals and four assists in 29 appearances for Bayern Munich.

While that is a brilliant record for a striker, it must be noted that he has achieved this in a Bayern Munich side that creates chances by the truckloads. A stat that backs that is that Choupo-Moting is having the best campaign in his career. He has never scored ten goals in 18 games. He has averaged one goal every 100 minutes. In his previous clubs, he was never this good.

Why should Bayern Munich sign Osimhen

Choupo-Moting is already 34 and has lost a lot of his pace. Bayern Munich has very fast wingers, and it would be brilliant if they have someone who has their speed in the frontline.

Victor Osimhen is obviously a fox in the box, and he does not think twice before he shoots. Owing to his young age he would react to opportunities faster than Choupo-Moting.

The Nigeria striker may not be as big as Choupo-Moting, but he has a more noticeable presence than the Bayern Munich hitman. Aerially, Osimhen is powerful even though Choupo-Moting edges him a little in terms of footwork.

Also, the Super Eagles striker’s pressing ability will come in very handy. Bayern Munich love to defend from the front, and Osimhen is a player that works very hard whenever he is on the pitch.

Manchester City struck gold when they signed Haaland as his brilliance in attack has been critical to their performance this season. Bayern Munich desperately need to get a top hitman soon. If not, next season could be worse than this.

Overall Osimhen is a better striker than Choupo-Moting. However, Bayern Munich are still dragging their feet because of Napoli’s €120million valuation of the striker.
