George Weah beware: Victor Osimhen’s pursuit of Serie A’s African goal-king title vs. Juventus

Napoli’s Victor Osimhen is on the cusp of making history in Serie A as he aims to equal George Weah’s record of 46 goals – the most by any African player in the competition’s history.

With 45 league goals in just three years, Osimhen has become a beloved figure in Naples.

In the midst of Napoli’s historic pursuit of their first Scudetto in over three decades, the striker has a chance to cement his legacy in the Serie A when they face Juventus on Sunday in their matchday 31 fixture.

While the game holds significant importance for both teams, with Juve aiming to secure a top-four finish ahead of their Coppa Italia semifinal against Inter next week and Napoli hoping to close out the title race, Osimhen’s pursuit of history adds another layer of intrigue to the game.

Despite some recent setbacks, including a loss at home to AC Milan, Napoli remains comfortable with a 14-point lead over second-placed Lazio. A win against Juventus, however, would bring them one step closer to their ultimate goal.

However, Osimhen’s pursuit of history is also worth watching out for.

The Super Eagles striker has been in exceptional form this season, leading the Serie A scoring charts and making him a top contender for the Capocannoniere award this June.

In the reverse fixture against Juve earlier this season, Osimhen’s brace helped Napoli to a dominant 5-1 victory, indicating a shift in the Serie A hierarchy.

Although Osimhen’s last-minute goal against Milan in midweek was not enough to keep Napoli in the Champions League, his next goal will see him equal George Weah’s record of 46 Serie A goals.

The 24-year-old striker will undoubtedly be motivated to make history against Juventus, and his current form suggests that he can achieve that feat.

Juve will undoubtedly attempt to prevent Osimhen from breaking the record. Still, regardless of the outcome, Sunday’s game promises to be a thrilling encounter between two of Serie A’s biggest clubs.

As Napoli aims to dethrone Juve as one of the league’s elite teams, Osimhen’s pursuit of history adds a fascinating subplot to the narrative. Will he equal Weah’s record, or will Juve stop his ambition? The stage is set for a captivating showdown.
