Berbatov wants Man United to sign Super Eagles star ‘having an unbelievable season’

Former Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov has urged the Red Devils to abandon their pursuit of Tottenham’s Harry Kane and instead focus on signing Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Berbatov, who scored 56 goals in 149 appearances for United, believes the Nigerian forward would be a perfect fit for the club, given his age and impressive form this season.

Osimhen, 24, has scored 21 goals in Serie A this season and has been instrumental in Napoli’s push for their first league title since 1990.

“It’s so difficult because you need someone who’s going to score goals. Someone who’s going to be the right age so he can develop and get better and better and better. So you have to use him for years to come. In my mind, that is Osimhen,” Berbatov told Goal.

“He’s having an unbelievable season and he’s doing great stuff. So this is the type of player I’d like to see for United.”

Berbatov was less enthusiastic about the prospect of United signing Kane, who he believes will stay at Tottenham, given his legacy at the club.

“You cannot argue with the goalscoring record of Harry Kane. He is one of the best of his generation in how he scores goals, how he plays the game, and how he sees the game. And he’s unbelievable,” Berbatov said.

“But the one concern I have is that age; he is [almost] 30 so nobody’s getting any younger. And in my mind, this is going to be a major concern if someone is going to buy him.”

Berbatov’s endorsement of Osimhen comes at a time when United are believed to be in the market for a new striker following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo in January.

The club has been linked with several high-profile forwards, but Berbatov believes Osimhen should be their top target.

Meanwhile, Osimhen scored his fifth goal in the Champions League on Tuesday night as Napoli crashed out of the competition on a 2-1 aggregate loss to AC Milan.
