“I made history with Morocco” – Nigerians react as Atlas Lions stun Ronaldo’s Portugal to enter the World Cup record books

Morocco pulled off a stunning victory in Qatar to become the first-ever African side to reach the final four at football’s biggest festival

Several Nigerian fans have expressed their delight at seeing Morocco beat Portugal 1-0 to advance to the semifinals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

Portugal were the heavy favourites to claim a win at the Al Thumama Stadium in Doha.

The Portuguese boasted the incredible talents of Manchester United pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, as well as AC Milan forward Rafael Leao. And only four days ago, the Portuguese handed a 6-1 thrashing to the previously solid Switzerland.

But things did not go as planned against the Moroccans on Saturday.

Boasting the best defence in Qatar, the Atlas Lions were already on a historic run at the Mundial having reached the quarterfinal stage for the first time in their history.

And they took it a notch higher by sealing a memorable victory over Portugal courtesy of a brilliant Youssef En-Nesyri header three minutes before the halftime break.

The Atlas Lions thus become the first-ever African nation to reach the semifinals of the World Cup.

Many Nigerians backed the Moroccans to stun the Portuguese and secure their place in the record books.

And many more joined the North Africans in celebrating a win that makes every living soul on the continent proud.

A Nigerian user on Twitter said: I made history with Morocco at Al Thumama stadium in Qatar as the first AFRICAN TEAM to make the SEMIFINALS of the World Cup.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar wrote on Twitter: “Congratulations, Morocco. This one is for Africa!!! -AA”

Another Nigerian wrote: The World Cup feeling is SPECIAL!!! Morocco have done it for Africa.”

In the final four, Morocco will play the winner of the quarter-final clash between France and England.
