“Playing football at Genk is not a punishment”- Super Eagles striker opens up on transfer saga

The big Nigerian striker has been continually linked with a move away from Cegeka Arena but it seems he would remain in Belgium for a long time

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has admitted that he will not try to force a move away from Genk despite his desire to leave the club.

Onuachu was crowned the best player in Belgium two years ago after he recorded 33 goals in 38 Jupiler League games. The FC Ebedei product 2as expected to leave the club after his stellar season. However, links to Lyon, West Ham, and Arsenal fell through.

The big 28-year-old striker remained in Belgium last season, but he failed to reach his heights in the 2020/21 season. Nonetheless, Onuachu scored 19 goals on the road to Genk’s eighth-place finish.

Last summer, Onuachu was linked to Atletico Madrid, Fiorentina, and Lazio. Still, all the talk amounted to naught. The Super Eagles striker has struggled with injuries in recent times. Onuachu was unable to begin the season with Genk due to an adductor injury.

So far, the former Midtjylland has played five league games for the Smurfs, but his game time has been limited, as he has played just 117 minutes all season.

There have been talks that his transfer saga at Genk may have played into his head. But Onuachu insists that he is comfortable at Genk despite his failure to seal a transfer.

“I am not aiming for a transfer during the winter transfer,” Onuachu revealed as per Voetbal 24.

“I put it out of my mind. It doesn’t help me to think about a transfer all the time.

“If the opportunity comes, all the better. I will hear it then. If it doesn’t come, then I’m at a very nice club. Playing football at Genk is not a punishment.”

Onuachu is yet to open his account for the season, but he would look to pick up the pace as soon as possible to help the Smurfs maintain their seven-game unbeaten run.

Genk’s next game is a tough fixture against Gent on Sunday.
