“He’s really good” – Courtois hails Nigeria’s newest striking sensation

The exciting Nigerian attacker has been one of the revelations of the season in the eight-matchday-old Belgian championship

Former Belgium national women’s team star Imke Courtois has showered praises on young Nigerian forward Victor Boniface following his brilliant start to life in the Belgian Pro League.

After spending over three years at Norway’s Bodø/Glimt, Boniface joined Royale Union Saint Gilloise in August for €2 million.

Union SG brought in the young Nigerian forward as a direct replacement for club hero Deniz Undav, who had completed a move to Brighton & Hove Albion for six million euros.

It was never going to be easy to fill in the shoes of the German forward who inspired Union SG’s promotion to the top flight in 2021 and then helped them finish second in their first season in the top flight.

But Boniface has not been shy in taking up the challenge. The 21-year-old has been impressive playing off top striker Dante Vanzeir and has shown versatility across the attack line.

Already likened to Chelsea man Romelu Lukaku, Boniface is causing all sorts of problems for defenders in Belgium and beyond.

Boniface has a goal and an assist in five league matches for Les Unionistes. And last Thursday, the young striker assisted Union SG’s winner at Union Berlin for their first-ever triumph in the Europa League.

And retired Standard Liège defender Imke Courtois is convinced that Boniface would be one of the revelations of the season.

“He’s really good: big, very strong, fast, good feet,” Courtois told De Zondag, as per Voetbal24.

“It’s great that Union found him. After Undav, the perfect complement for Dante Vanzeir. Kudos in any case to their transfer policy; that club is really excellently managed.”

Union SG will host Molde FF today (Thursday) at the Stade Joseph Mariën in Brussels on matchday two of the Europa League, and Boniface will aim to get his first goal in the competition.
