Iwobi is dogged but Jorginho’s kick seals victory for Sterling Chelsea

Frank Lampard’s lads were looking to begin the season on a high, but it did not go according to the plan

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi put up a dogged performance for Everton, but a first-half penalty from Jorginho gave Chelsea a 1-0 victory.

Everton welcomed Chelsea to Goodison Park in their opening fixture of the season. After the disappointment of last season, the toffees were looking to improve and start the season on a high with a victory.

Chelsea started the game on top, bossing possession. Latest signing Raheem Sterling looked fiery and lively, running the Chelsea attack.

Iwobi was strong in midfield, recording 47 touches with an 81 percent pass accuracy. The former Arsenal man helped defensively with three clearances and two interceptions.

The Toffees looked like they would go into the break with a goalless scoreline. However, a poor foul from Abdoulaye Doucoure gifted the blues a penalty.

Chelsea penalty expert Jorginho was on hand to convert from the spot, sending Pickford the wrong way.

Both teams entered the second half with the same high tempo, but none of them was able to rattle the net.

Nonetheless, the blues were the slightly better side, despite a dogged performance from the blues.

Chelsea held out for a 1-0 victory to ensure a great start to the season. However, for Everton, they would look to bounce back against Aston Villa next week.
