Some Nigeria internationals are without clubs at the moment, including Leon Balogun, Anthony Nwakaeme, Ogenyi Onazi, and Daniel Akpeyi, among others
Super Eagles goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has confessed that he has not been in contact with Premier Soccer League side Orlando Pirates, contrary to transfer rumours from a section of the media.
Akpeyi has been a free agent since June after Kaizer Chiefs turned down the chance to hand the 35-year-old a new contract. The Nigeria international was with the Amakhosi for three-and-a-half years.
Despite his advancing age, Akpeyi is still regarded as one of the finest shot-stoppers in South Africa.
And with the former Heartland FC goalie not ready to retire just yet, rumours linking him to Orlando Pirates have continued to gain momentum.
Akpeyi has not received any offers from the Sea Robbers, but the veteran goalkeeper admits he would jump at the chance to play for the 1995 CAF Champions League winners.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma’s leading reporter Masebe Qina in the publication’s latest edition, Akpeyi confirmed that he would not say no to the Pirates.
“I haven’t had any contact with anyone from Pirates, although they are a team I would mind joining because they are competing for the league and (honours) in Africa,” Akpeyi said.
“That’s the team to play for!”
With nine league titles and a record of 33 trophies, Orlando Pirates are one of the most successful clubs in South Africa.
The Buccaneers, in the nineties, had former Super Eagles goalkeeper Willy Okpara on their payroll.
