The Brazilian midfielder held the armband until his exit at the end of last season with a new captain expected to be named soon
Manchester City manager, Pep Guardiola has hinted on who the next captain of his squad will be after Fernandinho’s exit.
Fernandinho had been captain of the team since the 2020/21 season after the exit of Spanish international, David Silva at the end of the 2019/20 season.
Players and officials in the team had voted their new leaders in 2021, with Ilkay Gundogan emerging the first vice captain while Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne followed.
Guardiola, speaking in his press conference ahead of their Community Shield tie against Liverpool said the new captain will be chosen next week.
He hinted that he expects De Bruyne to have a big role in the squad as he’s one of the oldest and more senior members of the squad.
“We still have not made the decision – I think they will next week,” Guardiola said.
“I am pretty sure Kevin is one of the oldest players here and the responsibility he takes on the pitch, I am sure he will have a key role.”
Man City will face West Ham in the first game of the 2022/23 season next Sunday when they travel to the capital.
