The Dutch giants were in the market for a tall centre-forward but have decided against signing one of Nigeria’s tallest strikers in Europe
Per a report from transfer market guru Fabrizio Romano, Ajax Amsterdam have completed the signing of young Italian striker Lorenzo Lucca from Serie B side Pisa.
Ajax will initially pay Pisa €1 million for Lucca for a year-long loan spell and have agreed to a €10 million buy option clause with the Italian second division side.
Lucca’s move to Ajax effectively shuts the door on any hope Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu may have of joining the reigning Eredivisie champions.
Onuachu had been in the debate of likely strikers Ajax could sign, with the Dutch giants in the market to sign a tall striker as a temporary replacement for the injured Sebastien Haller.
At 2.01m tall and as one of the most prolific finishers in Belgium over the past two seasons, the Nigeria international appeared capable of filling the gap for the Amsterdam-based club.
The 28-year-old is also keen on leaving KRC Genk this summer, with the English Premier League and the French Ligue 1 among his preferred destinations.
A switch to Ajax would have also been welcomed, with the club set to feature prominently in next season’s UEFA Champions League.
But Ajax have decided to go instead for 2.01m-tall Lorenzo Lucca, with the Italy youth international expected to travel to the Netherlands this weekend for his medicals.
Onuachu is currently recuperating from an injury that has kept him out of action throughout the preseason.
The former FC Midtjylland ace could, however, make the Racing Genk squad set to host Standard Liege on Sunday in a Pro League matchday two encounter.
