Ajax want Super Eagles star to replace Manchester United-bound Martinez

The Eredivisie champions are set to lose the Argentine defender to the English Premier League giants

Ajax Amsterdam have lined up Nigerian defender Calvin Bassey as the perfect replacement for Argentine international Lisandro Martinez.

According to a TalkSport report, via Daily Record, Lisandro Martinez is on the verge of a £46 million move to Manchester United. And Ajax are convinced that versatile Glasgow Rangers star Calvin Bassey would fit firm into the gap left behind by the 2021 Copa America winner.

A relatively unknown quantity in 2020 when he swapped Leicester City for Rangers, Bassey has unsurprisingly become one of the most sought-after defenders in the European circuit.

A peripheral member of Rangers’ title-winning squad last year, Bassey made a huge step up this recently concluded season, becoming a vital part of the set-up at Ibrox.

Bassey played a crucial role as Rangers made it to the Europa League final. The 23-year-old was even named the man of the match in the penalty defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt. He was also included in the competition’s team of the season.

Bassey repeated that excellent display in the final of the Scottish Cup, as Rangers beat Hearts to the trophy.

With this string of impressive showings, the whole of Europe was alerted to his quality.

Several Premier League clubs, including Wolves, Brentford, and Chelsea, have been credited with an interest in the Super Eagles’ ace.

But Ajax may have jumped ahead of the queue with a £20 million deal being muted.

A versatile defensive kingpin, Bassey has excelled at centre-back, left full-back, and left wing-back for Glasgow Rangers.
