The Turkish side and their Nigerian attacker are yet to finalise contractual terms with only weeks left on his current deal
Super Lig champions-in-waiting Trabzonspor could take Nigerian international Henry Onyekuru back to Turkey after identifying the Olympiacos Piraeus winger as a possible transfer target this summer.
According to Fotospor, Trabzonspor are brazing up to the reality of losing key man Anthony Nwakaeme to rivals Fenerbahce on a free transfer, and they are lining up compatriot Onyekuru as his replacement.
Nwakaeme has been crucial to the Black Sea Storm cruising to their first league title in nearly forty years, contributing 11 goals and ten assists to the cause.
But, with Nwakaeme’s current contract expiring at the end of the season, both player and club have not concluded agreements on inking a new deal.
While the one-time Super Eagles ace prefers staying at Trabzon, being a fan favourite, he could switch to Fenerbahce. The yellow-and-blacks are reportedly willing to offer him twice his present salary.
With Nwakaeme living his last moments at Trabzonspor, the club’s manager Abdullah Avci has drawn up a plan B, which includes bringing in former Galatasaray winger Onyekuru.
Onyekuru has not had the best of times in Greece since his summer switch, with the ex-Eupen star registering no goal and no assist in 14 league games for Olympiacos.
But the 24-year-old has an excellent record in Turkey, scoring 22 goals and supplying 12 assists in 71 games for Galatasaray across three loan spells.
And Trabzonspor are rumoured to be planning on swapping 30-year-old Turkey international and long-term Olympiacos target Yunus Mallı for Onyekuru.
Currently valued at €7 million, Onyekuru has a contract with Olympiacos until June 30, 2025.
