Unstoppable Onuachu helps Genk return to winning ways

The Smurfs were on the losing end last time out, but they returned to winning ways on Wednesday against KV Mechelen

Super Eagles star Paul Onuachu scored his 15th league goal of the season for Genk, as they returned to winning ways after thrashing rivals KV Mechelen 4-1 at the Cegeka Arena.

The Belgian Cup champions’ European dreams suffered a dent last Sunday after losing 2-1 away to Leuven.

However, they redeemed themselves against fellow Europe hopefuls KV Mechelen. The visitors were on a three-game winning streak, but the Smurfs put an end to their run.

Genk forward Lucas Oyen eased his side into the game just five minutes after kickoff, as he placed a cool finish behind KV Mechelen keeper Couke, off an assist from Tresor Ndayishimiye.

Genk’s night got even better, as Thibault Peyre got sent off after a straight red card in the 25th minute.

However, it was in the second half that Genk took advantage of their visitors’ one-man deficit.

KV Mechelen scored immediately after the break to restore parity, but Genk responded through Saddick in the 66th minute to make it 2-1.

Theo Bongonda made it three for the Smurfs before Onuachu scored in the 86th minute to put the final nail in KV Mechelen’s coffin.

Onuachu had 28 touches in the game and a 75 percent pass accuracy. He missed a chance earlier in the game, but his late goal saved his blushes.

He was hauled off immediately after his goal for Ouattara Mohammed.

The victory takes Genk to eight on the Jupiler League log, the last Europa Conference League playoff spot.
