The German tactician was relieved of his duties barely a month to the AFCON, but some Super Eagles players were not happy with the decision
Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has revealed that he and his teammates were not happy with the sack of the former Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr.
The German tactician was appointed in August 2016, and he helped stabilise a shaky Super Eagles side that had failed to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations two times consecutively.
During his five-year stint with the Super Eagles, most members of the current team established themselves as regular, and he also handed debuts to a few others.
The former Bordeaux boss also had a good relationship with the players, which was visible after his sack as some of the players took to their social media handles to wish him well.
After the game against Egypt, Man of the Match Iheanacho revealed that the Super Eagles players were upset when their coach was sacked.
“We were really gutted that the former coach left, and we got a new manager,” Iheanacho said at the post-match conference as per Victor Modo.
“But as professionals, we need to always be focused in our games. We are not gonna get distracted, and hopefully, he’s gonna find a place to move forward in his coaching career.”
Meanwhile, Iheanacho and his teammates are set to have another manager after the AFCON following the Nigeria Football Federation’s (NFF) decision to appoint Jose Peseiro.
true talk my brother ihenacho even me am not happy, that man Built a wonder team in you guys, they did not let him enjoy his labour very bad from the NFF
Not a fan of Gernot. I feel he under delivered. No need for local Naija coaches they’re are more sentimental than tactical not a fan of Naija coaches. NFF should have gone for a Dutch tactician instead. The Dutch football is suited to Nigeria style of soccer. Don’t expect much from the new coach either.
