The Alanyaspor defender has been conspicuously missing in Nigeria’s first two games of the AFCON, but he could return today
Super Eagles defender Chidozie Awaziem has hailed his teammates for their unity and supportive nature in camp. He believes that it would work in their favour as they look to win a fourth Africa Cup of Nations crown in Cameroon.
Awaziem has not been part of the team since the beginning of the AFCON because he was ill and battling an ankle injury.
Nevertheless, his absence was not felt as Kenneth Omeruo formed a strong partnership with vice-captain Williams Troost-Ekong at the heart of the defence.
The duo was outstanding against Egypt, blocking out their attack, and they could have secured a second clean sheet against Sudan, but for Ola Aina’s mistake, that caused a penalty.
Speaking after his return to training, Awaziem hailed his teammates for their supportive nature.
“There’s a really good positive feeling in the team,” Awaziem told TVC News.
“The group is a very wonderful group, everyone helps each other, we all carry each other along, and I think it’s a really wonderful group and with this feeling I know we’re gonna go far.”
Nigeria play Guinea-Bissau on Wednesday, but the Super Eagles have already secured their spot in the knockout rounds.
As a result, Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen has the luxury of making some changes to the team, and Awaziem could get his chance.
