The Foxes knew a win in their penultimate group game would send them top, and they did just that, thanks to the performance of one of their Nigerian imports
Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi was on target as Leicester City moved top of their group in the Europa League with a win over Legia Warsaw at the King Power Stadium on Thursday night.
Napoli’s loss to Spartak Moscow in Russia on Wednesday evening had blown the race for the top spot in Group C open.
Leicester knew they could take sole control with a win over Legia, and they got off to a good start as Patson Daka put them ahead in the 11th minute with a fine finish.
One soon became two as James Maddison doubled the home side advantage in the 21st minute. But five minutes later, Legia was handed a lifeline after Ndidi gave away a penalty.
Mahir Emreli’s took the penalty, but Kasper Schmeichel saved, only for Filip Mladenović to tap home the rebound and reduce the deficit for the away side.
However, Leicester restored their two-goal lead seven minutes later as Ndidi redeemed himself by heading in from a corner kick.
It proved to be the last goal of the match despite both teams going close in the second half. The result lifts Brendan Rodgers men to the top of their group with eight points, one ahead of Spartak and Napoli.
The Foxes still have work to do, though, as all teams in the group are still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockout round.
