Xisco dismissed as Nigerian stars Dennis, Etebo, Troost-Ekong get set for a new manager at Watford

The Spaniard has overseen a disappointing start to the Premier League campaign for the Hornets and has been relieved of his duties

The Super Eagles trio of William Troost-Ekong, Emmanuel Dennis and Oghenekaro Etebo are set to work under a new manager after Watford terminated the appointment of Xisco Munoz.

Watford, in a press release on their website, confirmed the sack of the Spanish tactician, who becomes the first manager to be dismissed in the English Premier League this term.

“Watford FC confirms Xisco Muñoz has left his post as the club’s Head Coach,” the statement read in part.

“The Board feels recent performances strongly indicate a negative trend at a time when team cohesion should be visibly improving.”

Xisco, who was appointed in December 2020, became the toast of Hornets’ fans a few months ago when he guided the side back to the Premier League. But he is the first EPL manager to be shown the exit door this season.

Watford have won just twice in the league, against Aston Villa and Norwich City, and lost 1-0 on Saturday at Leeds. The Hornets were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Stoke City in September.

Super Eagles vice-captain Troost-Ekong joined Watford from Udinese last season, featuring in 20 Championship games before making nine appearances this term.

Dennis, who was signed for €4 million from Club Brugge, has been one of the Hornets’ better performers, netting twice in seven games.

Nigerian midfielder Etebo arrived on loan from Watford, but he recently suffered an injury that will keep him out of the Super Eagles World Cup qualifiers against the Central African Republic.
