Victor Osimhen sends Napoli to the top of Serie A

The 22-year-old was the hero the Neapolitans needed as they maintained their 100% record in the Italian top-flight this season with a hard-fought win over Torino

Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen scored the only goal of the game to help Napoli beat Torino in their Serie A clash at the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Sunday evening.

In a match that pitted two Super Eagles stars against each other, it was Osimhen that prevailed against his international teammate Ola Aina.

Both players played the full minutes of the encounter for their respective teams. Napoli went into the game with a 100% in the Italian Serie A this season and knew a win would send them back to the top.

Luciano Spalletti’s men started on the front foot, with Osimhen trying his luck from the outside. The Neapolitans first real chance of the game came in the 26th minute when they were awarded a penalty.

However, Lorenzo Insigne missed the resulting spot-kick, his third this season and second successive miss from the spot.

Napoli struggled to create clear chances following the penalty miss as Torino, who had Aina in their defence, defended well to end the opening half with a clean sheet.

Napoli started the second half, searching for the opener, but it was Torino that came close. However, they were denied by Ospina on several occasions.

The game appeared to be heading for a stalemate until Osimhen popped up in the 81st minute to score what proved to be the winner.

The Nigerian rose highest to head home after a clearance inside Torino’s box had ricocheted off Eljif Elmas following a brilliant team move from Napoli.

It is Osimhen’s fifth goal in seven Serie A games this season and his eighth goal in all competitions. With the win, Napoli remain the only side in Europe’s top five leagues with a 100% record.
