Les Girondins were heading to their third defeat in four matches before the Nigerian international produced an extraordinary bit of individual quality to earn his side a share of the spoils
Samuel Kalu scored a brilliant goal that will surely make the Ligue 1 highlight reels of matchday seven to help Bordeaux seal a 3-3 draw away at Montpellier on Wednesday night.
Kalu has struggled since surviving that scary incident that saw him faint on the pitch only to recover and continue for a while before being substituted in the opening 14 minutes of Bordeaux’s 2-2 draw at Marseille.
The 24-year-old playmaker was introduced from the bench against Angers and Nice and didn’t make the squad that lost at home to Lens. He was also an unused substitute last weekend as Les Girondins stunned Saint-Etienne 2-1 on Saturday.
His name was again missing in the starting eleven at the Stade de la Mosson, but he entered the fray at halftime with Bordeaux leading 2-1 as goals from Hwang Ui-Jo and Onana had upturned Germain’s 11th-minute opener for Montpellier.
But the hosts roared back after the break and looked set to bag all three points as Germain scored another and Mollet struck a third with just 20 minutes left of regulation time.
Kalu, though, had other ideas, and the former Gent man single-handedly dragged Bordeaux back on levelled terms in the 85th minute, as he dribbled several Montpellier defenders before slotting the ball into the net.
It’s Kalu’s first Ligue 1 goal of the season. The winger hit the target four times in 20 league games for Bordeaux last season.
