Aina’s Torino sink Simy’s Salernitana; Asoro breaks goalscoring duck; Ejuke’s CSKA avoid embarrassing defeat

There was more football action for players of Nigerian descent in some of Europe’s notable leagues on Sunday afternoon

Versatile Nigerian defender Ola Aina came off the bench to help Torino smash Salernitana 4-0 at the Stadio Olimpico Grande in Torino.

Joel Obi and Simy Nwankwo started for the visitors but could not stop Antonio Sanabria from giving the hosts the lead on the stroke of halftime.

The Nigerian duo was replaced before the hour mark, and Gleison Bremer had doubled Torino’s lead before Aina was introduced in the 65th minute.

Two late strikes from Tommaso Pobega and Sasa Lukic then sealed the fate of the Serie A newbies.

Meanwhile, after 15 matches in the Swedish top-flight, Joel Asoro finally claimed his first goal for Djurgaarden in the side’s 4-1 humbling of Hammarby at the Tele2 Arena.

Amos Akinkunmi was missing for the visitors, but they still took the lead through Ludwigson’s 19th-minute opener.

But ex-Sunderland prodigy Asoro, born in Sweden to Nigerian parents, made it 3-1 moments before halftime after a Magnus Eriksson brace had turned the tie in the home side’s favour. Edward Chilufya then capped a fine afternoon with a firm finish 15 minutes from time.

Fresh from delivering a man-of-the-match display for the Super Eagles in Cape Verde, Chidera Ejuke dropped another eye-catching performance for CSKA Moscow at the Arsenal Stadion.

But it was not enough as Aleksey Berezutski’s men could only manage a 2-2 draw with home side Arsenal Tula.

Before kickoff, the Moscovites were the big favourites ahead of a struggling Arsenal Tula side second from the bottom of the league table.

But the former champions needed a 74th-minute Fedor Chalov strike to earn a share of the points.

The draw leaves CSKA sixth on ten points, seven behind pacesetters Zenit St Petersburg.
