The 23-year-old attacker was yet again the hero for The Iron Ones as they started their UEFA Europa Conference League with an emphatic win away from home
Taiwo Awoniyi continued his brilliant start to the season after scoring twice and setting up another in Union Berlin’s 4-0 thrashing of KuPS in their Europa Conference League playoff clash.
Awoniyi joined Union Berlin on a permanent deal from Liverpool after spending last season on loan. The former Mainz striker began the season with an assist in the DFB Pokal win over Türkgücü München before scoring the opener against Bayer Leverkusen.
He continued in the same vein on Thursday evening, scoring twice as Union all but secured their place in the Europa Conference League group stages with an emphatic win over the Finnish side at the Savon Sanomat Areena.
Awoniyi opened the scoring for Urs Fischer’s men in the seventh minute, finishing off an assist from Tymoteusz Puchacz.
The former Golden Eaglets striker then turned provider as he combined with Max Kruse in the 29th minute for the away side’s second goal of the evening.
Two minutes later, Kruse repaid the favour by setting up Awoniyi for his second of the night. Andreas Voglsammer added gloss to the scoreline by finishing off a ball from Cedric Teuchert in the second minute of added time.
