Middlesbrough secure the signature of Nigeria-eligible striker

The Teeside club have strengthened their attacking options with their latest acquisition

England Championship side Middlesbrough have completed the signing of Nigeria-eligible forward Toyosi Olusanya.

Boro confirmed the forward signed a two-year deal at the club after playing for non-EFL side Billericay Town last season.

Signing players from the lower levels of English football to the Championship is not a common occurrence, but Middlesbrough Coach Neil Warnock is not concerned about the rarity of the deal.

The former Crystal Palace manager stated his pleasure in having the former Wimbledon man in his team and affirmed his belief in Olusanya’s abilities.

“I wanted to give him an opportunity, Warnock said on Boro’s website.

“I came from non-league myself, I watched him play and I just had hunch. He knows Isaiah [Jones] too, which is a plus.”

“I hope he enjoys himself here, it’s a big ask, but I hope he can excite everyone here like he excites me. He’s got a great attitude.”

Olusanya came through from the AFC Wimbledon Academy, but he made only one appearance for the Dons before going on loan to non-league side Kingstonian.

The Lambeth-born striker will look to gain experience from his new gaffer as he has no experience playing EFL football.

Olusanya was born to Nigerian parents in England. However, he hasn’t represented England or Nigeria at any level and can still play for the Super Eagles.
