Nasarawa United and Kano Pillars suffered fatal blows to their title aspirations, while Akwa United looked to be cruising to the title after a crucial win
NPFL game week 34 kicked off today. As usual, the primary focus was at the top of the table where Akwa United, Rivers United, Enyimba and Kano Pillars are currently jostling for positions.
Akwa United, Rivers United, and Kano Pillars were in action today.
Akwa United established a six-point lead at the top of the table after a masterful 3-0 win over Warri Wolves at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
Charles Atshimene added two goals to his tally to reach 14 goals this season, while Ubong Friday scored in between to wrap up the victory for Akwa.
Kano Pillars flattered to deceive away at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu as they lost to two first-half goals from Christian Nnaji and Archibong Eso.
Super Eagles Captain Ahmed Musa was off duty for the Sai Masu Gida as rumours linked him with a move to Turkey. The loss takes Pillars six points away from table-toppers Akwa United.
After a third-minute goal from the league’s highest goal scorer, it looked like Nasarawa were set to nick a crucial away win from Lobi stars.
But a brace from Mathias Martins and a goal from Austin Ogunye crushed the hearts of the fans from Nasarawa as Lobi Stars clinched three points from the grasp of The Solid Miners.
Rivers United continued with their poor away form as a struggling Jigawa Golden Stars defeated them. A first-half equaliser from Bamba Bakari was not enough for The Pride of Rivers, as a 58th Minute goal from Ali Malls was enough to see the Badaru Boys through.
Enyimba will have the chance to climb to the second position when they face Ifeanyi Ubah tomorrow. If they win at Nnewi, they will rise to 60 points- four points off Akwa United at the top.
